What is Odoo consulting?

Odoo consulting is expert advice on how Odoo should fit your business, before or after you buy. It covers discovery and fit-gap analysis, process redesign, solution architecture, edition, plan and hosting choices, licence optimisation, health checks, upgrade planning and roadmaps, so decisions rest on evidence rather than a sales demo.

01Who it is for
Businesses evaluating Odoo, planning a rollout, or running an Odoo that is not delivering
02What you get
Written findings: fit-gap, architecture, licence plan, risks and a prioritised roadmap
03How it is scoped
Fixed-scope engagements, sized to the decision after a free call
04Your partner
Thoughtlogik, Official Odoo Partner with UK consultants and our own Odoo developers

Why advice comes first

Most ERP risk is decided before the build starts.

Plan, architecture and scope choices made in the first weeks shape cost and success for years. The research is clear on what goes wrong.

40k+

community apps for Odoo, so there is often more than one way to close a gap

Odoo, 2026 →
70%+

of recently implemented ERP initiatives will not fully meet their original objectives by 2027, Gartner forecasts

Gartner →
36%

of SaaS licences go unused in the average organisation

Zylo SaaS Management Index, 2026 →
45%

average budget overrun on large IT projects, which also delivered 56% less value than predicted

McKinsey and Oxford, 2012 →

Gartner and McKinsey figures cover ERP and IT projects in general. Zylo measures SaaS licences across all tools, not Odoo alone. McKinsey's study dates from 2012.

Sound familiar?

Expensive Odoo mistakes, and how good advice prevents them.

Most of the Odoo problems we are asked to fix were decided, or missed, before a single screen was configured.

The cheapest time to change an Odoo decision is before it is built.

01

Buying the wrong plan

Standard looks cheaper until you need multi-company, Studio or an API integration and have to move to Custom.

→ Fix: plan and hosting matched to your real requirements

02

Full licences for occasional users

Staff who only clock in, record expenses or work on the shop floor may not need a full user licence.

→ Fix: a user-by-user licence review, including Light User

03

Customising what Odoo already does

Custom modules built for problems standard Odoo solves add cost at every upgrade.

→ Fix: fit-gap analysis that tests standard Odoo first

04

Community chosen for the wrong reasons

Free licences can cost more if you rebuild Enterprise features or lose official support and the upgrade service.

→ Fix: a total cost comparison of Community and Enterprise

05

A stalled or unloved implementation

Users avoid the system, the data is wrong and nobody owns the roadmap.

→ Fix: a health check and a written recovery plan

06

Upgrades put off for years

Each skipped version means more custom code to port. Standard support lasts three years per major version.

→ Fix: an upgrade plan that retires custom code where possible

How an Odoo consulting engagement works

From open questions to a plan you can act on.

We use the first two phases of our SCALE method, Scope and Craft, as a stand-alone engagement. Each step ends with something written that you keep.

Scope

Understand the business first

CRMSalesInventoryAccounting

Short, structured workshops with each department capture how work really flows today, where time and money leak, and what success should look like in measurable terms.

  • Stakeholder interviews and workshops
  • Current processes and pain points mapped
  • Volumes, users and data sources
  • Success measures agreed
  • Constraints: budget, timing, IT

A shared, written picture of today and the goal.

Redesign processes around Odoo

Rather than copying old workarounds, we design to-be processes that use Odoo as intended, remove hand-offs and make ownership clear. Your team signs them off before anything is built.

Community or Enterprise?

Odoo Community vs Enterprise, honestly compared.

Community is free and open source. Enterprise adds apps, hosting choices, official support and the upgrade service. The right answer depends on total cost and your team, not the licence price alone.

Community can suit businesses with in-house or partner developers, a narrow scope and no need for Enterprise-only apps. Enterprise is usually simpler for firms that want Odoo-run hosting, official support, upgrades and apps such as Studio and bank synchronisation. We compare both on your scope, over several years, before you decide.

Odoo health check

Six areas we audit in a live Odoo system.

Click through each area to see what good looks like, and what to ask whoever supports your Odoo today.

Is Odoo configured as designed?

Over time settings drift, duplicate automations appear and standard features go unused while staff work around them.

What good looks likeSettings documented, standard features used where they fit and no orphaned automations.
How Thoughtlogik does itWe compare live configuration against your processes and list quick wins that need no code.

Ask any partner: “Which standard Odoo features are we not using that would replace a workaround?”

Is custom code justified and maintainable?

Custom modules are not maintained under the Odoo subscription and must be ported at every major upgrade.

What good looks likeEach module has an owner, a reason, tests and a plan for the next version.
How Thoughtlogik does itWe review every custom and third-party module and flag those that standard Odoo now covers.

Ask any partner: “Which of our custom modules could we retire at the next upgrade?”

Can people trust the data?

Duplicate contacts, wrong product costs and unreconciled accounts quietly erode trust in the system.

What good looks likeNo duplicate partners, the right costing method, reconciled stock valuation and balances.
How Thoughtlogik does itWe run checks on contacts, products, stock valuation and the ledger, and size the clean-up.

Ask any partner: “When was stock valuation last reconciled to the balance sheet?”

Is UK compliance set up correctly?

VAT mapping, the MTD connection, BACS files and CIS settings are easy to get subtly wrong.

What good looks likeVAT return mapped and tested, MTD connected, payment files and CIS checked with your accountant.
How Thoughtlogik does itWe review the UK localisation and tax set-up with your finance team and accountant.

Ask any partner: “Who last checked our VAT return mapping, and when?”

Are you paying for the right licences?

Inactive users, full licences for light use and the wrong plan all add avoidable cost.

What good looks likeEvery user active and on the right licence type, with the plan matched to real needs.
How Thoughtlogik does itWe review users, roles and plan, including Light User eligibility at £6.90 per month.

Ask any partner: “How many of our users only clock in, file expenses or work on the shop floor?”

Is the system secure and supported?

Each major Odoo version gets three years of standard support. Old versions and broad access rights carry risk.

What good looks likeA supported version, least-privilege access, tested backups and an agreed upgrade date.
How Thoughtlogik does itWe review access groups, version support dates and your upgrade path.

Ask any partner: “When does standard support end for our Odoo version?”

FAQs

Odoo consulting: your questions answered.

Cannot see your question? Our UK consultants are happy to talk it through.

What does an Odoo consultant do?

An Odoo consultant helps you decide how Odoo should fit your business. That covers requirements and fit-gap analysis, process redesign, solution architecture, edition, plan and hosting choices, licence optimisation, health checks, upgrade planning and project recovery. The output is written advice you can act on, with us or with your own team.

Is Odoo Community or Enterprise better for us?

Community is free and open source but has no Odoo functional support, no official upgrade service and fewer apps, for example no Studio or bank synchronisation. Enterprise adds these on a per-user subscription. For businesses without in-house developers, Enterprise is usually the simpler choice, but we compare both on your scope before you decide.

Should we choose the Standard or Custom plan?

Standard is £18 per user per month billed yearly for the first 12 months, then £22, and gives every app on Odoo Online. Custom is £32, then £41, and adds Studio, multi-company, the external API and Odoo.sh or on-premise hosting. If you need any of those now or soon, plan for Custom from the start.

What is the Odoo Light User licence?

Light User is a lower-cost licence at £6.90 per user per month for people who only use a limited set of apps, such as shop floor or warehouse staff. Where many staff need only simple access, it can reduce licence costs. Odoo lists the eligible apps and we check eligibility user by user. See our Light User guide.

What does an Odoo health check cover?

We review configuration against your processes, custom and third-party modules, data quality, UK finance set-up, users and licences, access rights and your version support date. You receive a written report with a prioritised fix list that separates quick configuration wins from larger changes.

Can you rescue an Odoo project another partner started?

Yes. We start with a short health check of the system and the project, agree what to keep, fix or rebuild, then re-plan the remaining work with clear milestones. See ERP and CRM project rescue.

How do Odoo upgrades work?

Odoo's upgrade service converts standard apps and data, and Studio changes while Studio is active. Custom modules must be ported to the new version first. Each major version gets three years of standard support. We plan the path, port or retire custom code and test before you switch. See Odoo upgrades.

Do we have to implement with you after consulting?

No. Our findings, fit-gap register and roadmap are yours to use with your own team or another partner. If you do continue with us, the discovery work carries straight into the build, so nothing is repeated or paid for twice.
