What is Odoo Inventory?
Odoo Inventory is the warehouse management app inside Odoo ERP. It records every product movement between locations as a double-entry stock move, so receipts, transfers, picking, packing and deliveries update stock levels, valuation and accounting in real time, across one warehouse or many.
- 01Where it fits
- Wholesalers, distributors, manufacturers, eCommerce brands and any UK business that holds stock.
- 02What it replaces
- Spreadsheet stock lists, paper pick lists, standalone stock tools and month-end stock journals.
- 03Works with
- Odoo Purchase, Sales, Manufacturing, eCommerce, Point of Sale and Accounting, in one database.
- 04Typical timeline
- Typically 6 to 8 weeks for a focused stock, sales and finance rollout, longer with manufacturing or several companies.
Why stock accuracy matters
Stock is where cash, service and margin meet.
Every UK business that holds stock lives with the same tension: enough to serve customers, not so much that cash sits on shelves. Accurate, real-time stock data is what makes that balance possible.
UK wholesale businesses registered for VAT or PAYE, March 2025
ONS, 2025 →UK manufacturing businesses, most holding raw materials and finished goods
ONS, 2025 →of all UK retail sales were made online in 2025, so stock must be right on every channel
ONS, 2026 →users worldwide work in Odoo, the platform behind Odoo Inventory
Odoo, 2026 →ONS business counts cover VAT or PAYE registered businesses. Odoo figure from the odoo.com homepage, October 2026.

Where stock control breaks down
Stock problems rarely start in the warehouse. They start when the system cannot keep up with how goods really move.
Each of these has a standard Odoo answer. The work is in designing it around your warehouse.
The system says 40, the shelf says 12
Stock is adjusted in a spreadsheet after the fact, so nobody trusts the number on screen.
→ Fix: every movement is a scanned stock move, so on-hand is always current.
Pickers walk the whole warehouse
There is no putaway logic or pick sequence, so time goes on searching, not picking.
→ Fix: putaway rules, storage categories and batch or wave picking.
Short-dated stock gets left behind
Without expiry dates on lots, older stock is buried and later written off.
→ Fix: lot and expiry tracking with FEFO removal.
Reordering lives in one person’s head
Buyers reorder on gut feel, so fast lines run out and slow lines pile up.
→ Fix: min/max reordering rules and a replenishment report that drafts purchase orders.
Finance cannot value the stock
Stock value is a month-end estimate, and freight and duty are guessed.
→ Fix: automated valuation with Standard, AVCO or FIFO costing, plus landed costs.
Web orders oversell
The online shop and marketplaces each hold their own stock figure, updated by hand.
→ Fix: one stock figure shared by Odoo eCommerce and connected channels.

From goods-in to delivered and valued.

Scope and craft
Map locations, routes and rules
We walk your warehouse with you and model it in Odoo: sites, zones, bins, storage categories and the routes goods follow. Then we choose 1, 2 or 3-step receipts and deliveries based on your volumes and checks.
- Warehouse and location hierarchy
- Receipt and delivery steps per site
- Putaway rules and storage categories
- Removal strategy per product category
- Lot, serial and expiry policy

Goods in
Receive against the purchase order
Receipts are created from purchase orders, so the dock knows what is due. Staff scan products and lots, a quality step runs where you need one, and putaway rules suggest the right bin.
- Expected receipts from purchase orders
- Scanning of products, lots and serials
- Optional quality step before stock
- Putaway rules suggest the destination
- Backorders created for short deliveries
Stock is available to sell the moment it is put away.

Purchasing
Reorder before you run out
Reordering rules watch forecast stock, not just today’s count, and draft purchase or manufacturing orders when a line drops below its minimum. Special items can be bought to order or shipped straight from the supplier.
- Min/max reordering rules per location
- Replenishment report with suggested quantities
- Make to order for special items
- Dropship from supplier to customer
- Vendor lead times and pricelists
Buyers review suggestions instead of building lists by hand.
Goods out
Pick the right lot, ship with the right carrier
Confirmed orders reserve stock using your removal strategy. Pickers work through batches or waves on a scanner, pack into packages with weights, and the carrier label prints from Odoo.
- Batch and wave picking
- FIFO, FEFO, LIFO or closest-location removal
- Packages with weights and dimensions
- Carrier labels from DHL, UPS, FedEx and others
- Royal Mail typically via a shipping aggregator
Fewer mis-picks and no retyping of addresses.
Control
Cycle counts and valuation finance trusts
Instead of one painful annual stock-take, locations are counted on a schedule. Every move is valued using your costing method, and stock journal entries post automatically, so the balance sheet and the warehouse agree.
- Scheduled cycle counts by location
- Counting on scanners
- Standard, AVCO or FIFO costing
- Automated stock journal entries
- Landed costs added to product cost

FAQs
Odoo Inventory UK questions
Cannot see your question? Our UK consultants are happy to talk it through.
Is Odoo Inventory a full warehouse management system?
For most UK small and mid-sized businesses, yes. Odoo Inventory covers multiple warehouses and locations, routes, multi-step receipts and deliveries, putaway rules, batch and wave picking, lots, serials and expiry dates, plus barcode scanning. Very high-volume automated warehouses sometimes pair Odoo with a specialist system, which we can integrate.
Does Odoo work with Royal Mail?
Odoo has no native Royal Mail connector. Its official shipping connectors include DHL, UPS, FedEx, Sendcloud, EasyPost and Starshipit. UK businesses typically reach Royal Mail through a shipping aggregator, so labels and tracking still come from inside Odoo. We confirm your carrier mix during scoping and choose the right route.
Which stock valuation methods does Odoo support?
Odoo supports Standard Price, Average Cost (AVCO) and FIFO costing, set per product category. With automated valuation, stock moves post journal entries to your stock accounts as they happen. LIFO exists in Odoo as a picking (removal) strategy, not as a costing method. We agree the method with your accountant before go-live.
Can Odoo track lots, serial numbers and expiry dates?
Yes. Products can be tracked by lot or by unique serial number, and lots can carry expiration and best-before dates. With FEFO removal, Odoo reserves the lot that expires first. Traceability reports show where each lot came from and which customers received it, which supports recall readiness.
Do we need the Barcode app?
It is optional, but we recommend it once more than a few people handle stock. The Barcode app lets staff receive, pick, pack and count on scanners or phones, checking each product and lot as they go. It is included in Odoo’s Standard and Custom plans.
Can Odoo keep our web shop and marketplaces in sync?
Odoo eCommerce uses the same stock figures as your warehouse, so there is nothing to sync. Odoo also offers an official Amazon connector. Other shops and marketplaces typically connect through Odoo App Store connectors or a custom integration, and we recommend the option that fits your order volumes.
How long does an Odoo Inventory implementation take?
A focused rollout of stock, purchasing, sales and accounting typically takes 6 to 8 weeks. Projects with several warehouses, manufacturing or multiple companies typically take 3 to 5 months. Data quality, barcode labelling and the number of process variations are the biggest factors. Try the estimator above for an indicative range.
Can you move our stock data from our current system?
Yes. We migrate products, locations, lots and opening quantities and values using Odoo’s import framework, keeping original references so every record traces back. Quantities and values are reconciled against your old system before go-live. See our Odoo migration service for how we plan and rehearse the move.
