In one sentence
What does Odoo migration mean?
Odoo migration covers two kinds of project. An upgrade moves an existing Odoo database to a newer version, from Community to Enterprise, or to different hosting. A migration to Odoo moves your data from another system, such as Sage, Xero, QuickBooks or SAP Business One, into a new Odoo database.
- 01Version upgrades
- Odoo’s upgrade service converts standard apps and data. Custom modules must be ported by a developer.
- 02Moves to Odoo
- There are no official one-click importers, so data is mapped and loaded through Odoo’s import framework.
- 03Why now
- Odoo 17 standard support ended in September 2026. Odoo 18 follows in September 2027.
- 04Typical timeline
- A few weeks for a standard upgrade, longer with many custom modules or several source systems.
Why it matters
Old versions and messy data get more expensive every year.
Unsupported software stops receiving fixes, and every year of workarounds adds data that someone has to untangle later.
of standard support for each major Odoo version, then paid extended support
Odoo support policy, 2026 →Odoo 17 standard support ended. Odoo 18 follows in September 2027
Odoo support policy, 2026 →median ERP project timeline across all vendors (170 respondents)
Panorama ERP Report, 2026 →average yearly cost of poor data quality to organisations, which is why we cleanse before we load
Gartner, 2020 →Panorama and Gartner figures cover ERP and data projects generally, not Odoo specifically.
Migration risks
What is keeping you on the old system?
Most migrations stall for the same handful of reasons. Every one of them can be planned for.
None of these is unusual. Each one is a planning task, and we show you the order to tackle them in.
Our version is out of support
The vendor or Odoo has moved on, and the people who customised your system have left.
→ Fix: a planned upgrade to a supported version, tested on a copy first.
Custom modules nobody understands
Code was written for older versions, with little documentation and no current owner.
→ Fix: a code review, then modules ported, retired or replaced by standard features.
The same customer saved five ways
Years of manual entry created duplicates, abbreviations and missing fields.
→ Fix: profiling and cleansing against rules your data owners agree.
We are afraid of losing history
Nobody has decided which history the business needs in the new system.
→ Fix: a history strategy, with the rest archived and still findable.
Data lives outside the system
Price agreements and stock locations sit in spreadsheets the old system could not hold.
→ Fix: every source inventoried, mapped and loaded with the core data.
We cannot afford days of downtime
A single untested cut-over leaves no time to learn how long loads really take.
→ Fix: timed trial migrations and a rehearsed cut-over runbook.
Odoo version support
Where does your Odoo version stand?
Odoo gives each major version three years of standard support, covering bug fixes and security updates. After that, extended support is available for an extra fee.

Source: Odoo support policy, checked October 2026. The Odoo 20 end date is inferred from the three-year policy.
On Odoo 16 or earlier? Standard support has already ended. Odoo’s policy states that upgrades are possible from any version, and versions can be skipped, but the bigger the jump, the more custom code and data needs checking. Our Odoo upgrades page goes deeper on version upgrades.

How we migrate
Rehearse the move until cut-over is routine.
Within our SCALE method, migration runs as its own workstream with signed-off checkpoints. Data is profiled, cleansed and loaded into a test database several times before anything touches the live system.
Scope
Find out what you really have
We extract data from your current system and spreadsheets, then measure it: record counts, duplicates, blanks and inconsistencies. For upgrades, we review every custom and third-party module. You see the real picture before anyone commits to a date.
- Data quality report by object
- Inventory of every source system
- Custom and third-party module register
- Agreed list of what migrates
- History and archive decision
No surprises later about the state of your data or code.

Decide where every field belongs
Every source field is matched to its Odoo equivalent, and original references are kept as external IDs so migrated records can always be traced back. Your data owners agree the cleansing rules; we apply them consistently.

Version upgrades
Upgrade a copy, port the custom code
For Odoo upgrades, we request an upgraded test database from Odoo’s upgrade service, which handles standard apps and Studio changes. Our developers port custom modules to the target version and replace third-party apps where needed.
- Upgraded test database from Odoo
- Custom modules ported to the target version
- Studio customisations checked
- Third-party apps updated or replaced
- Integrations retested end to end
An upgraded copy your users can test before the live switch.
Assemble
Load, check and repeat
We load the data into a test database, check it with your team, fix what is wrong and load again. Each trial is timed, so the real cut-over window is known long before go-live.
- At least two full trial loads
- Timed load runbook
- Exceptions log with owners
- User checks on real records
- Fixes applied at source or in rules
Go-live is a repeat of something that has already worked.

Prove the numbers, then switch
Balances, stock values and aged debt are reconciled line by line and signed off by your finance team. Then we follow the rehearsed runbook: freeze, final load, validation checks, and Odoo opens for business.
- Trial balance reconciled
- Aged debtors and creditors matched
- Stock quantities and values matched
- Go or no-go checkpoint
- Hypercare after go-live
A planned switch, not a leap of faith.

Duplicates, blanks and inconsistent values fixed against rules your data owners agree.
Mapping and external IDs
Every source field matched to Odoo, with original references kept so records trace back.
Opening balances
Trial balance, open receivables and payables, and stock valuation reconciled and signed off.
Historical data strategy
A clear decision on which history moves and which is archived but findable.
Version upgrades
Odoo’s upgrade service for standard apps, plus porting of custom and third-party modules.
Community to Enterprise
A planned technical move, since edition switches sit outside Odoo’s standard upgrade service.

FAQs
Odoo migration UK questions
Cannot see your question? Our UK consultants are happy to talk it through.
What does Odoo’s upgrade service cover?
Odoo’s upgrade service converts the standard apps and data in your database to the target version, including Studio customisations while Studio is active. It does not cover custom modules, code added to standard modules, third-party apps, edition or hosting switches, or migration from another ERP. Those need a partner to port, test and support.
Can we skip Odoo versions when upgrading?
Yes. Odoo’s support policy states that upgrades are possible from any version, and its documentation shows jumps that skip a version. Bigger jumps mean more change to test, especially in custom modules and integrations, so we always upgrade a copy first and run user acceptance testing before the live upgrade.
When does support end for our Odoo version?
Each major version gets three years of standard support. Odoo 17 standard support ended in September 2026, Odoo 18 ends in September 2027 and Odoo 19 in September 2028. Extended support is available afterwards for an extra fee. Clients on Thoughtlogik Shield for Odoo have these dates tracked for them.
Is there a one-click migration from Sage, Xero or QuickBooks?
No. Odoo does not publish official one-click importers for Sage, Xero, QuickBooks, SAP Business One or NetSuite. Data is extracted, cleansed, mapped and loaded through Odoo’s import framework, and some third-party connectors exist on the Odoo App Store. That is why profiling and trial migrations matter so much.
How much history should we bring across?
Usually less than you think. Most businesses migrate master data, open transactions and opening balances, plus a period of summarised history, while the full detail stays archived and searchable. We agree this with your finance and operations leads during profiling, because it drives both effort and cut-over time.
How long will the system be down at cut-over?
We time every load during trial migrations, so the cut-over window is known in advance and is usually planned over a weekend or a period end. For upgrades, the test copy runs alongside your live system, so downtime is limited to the final switch.
Can we move from Odoo Community to Enterprise?
Yes. Enterprise adds Odoo’s functional support, the upgrade service and Enterprise apps such as bank feeds and Barcode. Edition switches sit outside Odoo’s standard upgrade service, so we plan the move as a technical migration, check the community modules you rely on and test everything before switching.
Is migration part of an implementation or separate?
Both are possible. When you move to Odoo from another system, migration runs as its own workstream inside the Odoo implementation. Version upgrades and hosting moves are usually standalone projects. Either way, you get a data quality report, trial migrations and a reconciled cut-over.
