Introduction

Staying on top of conversations, updates, and tasks is essential for any growing business. Odoo’s Chatter feature makes this easy by bringing communication directly into your records.

With Chatter, you can:

  • Track every change on a record
  • Send and receive messages without leaving Odoo
  • Add notes, files, and reminders
  • Manage followers and subscriptions
  • Schedule activities and keep accountability

Think of it as your team’s built-in collaboration hub — seamlessly connected to every part of Odoo.

Step-by-Step Instructions

 

1. View and Use the Chatter Thread

  • Every record in Odoo (like a customer, sales order, or ticket) has a Chatter thread.
  • It automatically logs changes with details, timestamps, and who made the update.
  • If the system updates a record (e.g., via import), OdooBot logs it.

 Example: If you change a customer’s email, Chatter records both the old and new address.

 

2. Add and Manage Followers

Followers are people who want to stay updated on a record.

  • To follow: Open a record → click Follow (button changes to Following).
  • To add others: Click the user icon → Add Followers → select contacts.
  • To remove: Click the user icon → remove the follower.

 Followers get notifications depending on their subscription settings (which you can edit via the pencil icon).

 

3. Log Notes (Internal Communication)

  • Click Log note to leave a private message visible only to internal users.
  • Use @mention to tag colleagues — they’ll be notified.
  • External contacts can also be tagged, and they’ll receive an email. If they reply, it logs in Chatter.

 

4. Send Messages (External Communication)

  • Click Send message to contact customers, suppliers, or other partners directly.
  • Followers are automatically added as recipients.
  • Pro tip: Press Ctrl + Enter to send faster.

If you don’t want a follower to get a message, remove them first.

 

5. Expand the Composer

Need more space? Click the expand icon in the Chatter box.

  • Opens a full composer with recipients, subject, and templates.
  • Attach files using the paperclip icon.

6. Edit and Search Messages

  • To fix a message: Click the ellipsis (…) → Edit → Save with Ctrl + Enter.
  • To find old notes/messages: Use the search icon, type a keyword, and jump directly to the result.

7. Schedule Activities (Follow-Up Tasks)

  • Click Activities above the Chatter box → choose an activity type (e.g., call, meeting, email).
  • Assign to yourself or a colleague.
  • Color-coded icons:
    • Overdue
    • Due today
    • Future

Activities keep your pipeline moving without missing deadlines.

 

8. Attach Files

  • Click the paperclip icon or drag-and-drop files directly into Chatter.
  • Files stay attached to the record and can be downloaded by anyone with access.

 

9. Integrations (Optional)

  • WhatsApp (Enterprise only): Send approved WhatsApp templates directly from Chatter.
  • Google Translate: Instantly translate messages into your preferred language (requires API key + Google billing account).

 

Note: Zoho supports up to three levels of subpages with unlimited total pages.

9. Reorder Pages

Rearrange page order in your site’s navigation.

  • Go to Configuration > Menus.
  • Drag and drop pages in the desired sequence.
  • Click Save.

Tips

  • Use @mentions wisely to notify the right people.
  • Keep external communication professional — everything is logged.
  • Clean up followers regularly to avoid spamming the wrong users.
  • Schedule activities instead of relying only on messages.
  • Use the search tool when threads get long.
