Odoo Manufacturing work order dependencies let a bill of materials (BoM) block one operation until another has been completed, so production always happens in the correct sequence.

Before you start

The setting is off by default. Go to Manufacturing app > Configuration > Settings, enable Work Orders if it is not already on, then enable Work Order Dependencies underneath it and click Save.

How to add dependencies to a BoM

  1. Go to Manufacturing app > Products > Bills of Materials and open or create a BoM.
  2. On the Miscellaneous tab, tick Operation Dependencies.
  1. On the Operations tab, open the settings icon and enable Blocked By, which adds a Blocked By field to each operation.
  1. For the operation that should wait, click its Blocked By field and select the operation that must finish first.
  2. Save the BoM.

How work orders are scheduled

Once dependencies are set, go to Manufacturing app > Operations > Manufacturing Orders, select or create an order using that BoM, and confirm it. On the Work Orders tab, operations with no blocker show a Ready tag; blocked ones show Waiting for another WO until the blocking step is done.

Clicking Plan schedules each work order’s Start time: a blocked operation starts once the expected duration of the operation before it has elapsed.

Viewing the schedule

A visual timeline is available from Manufacturing app > Planning > Planning by Workcenter (or Planning by Production). Dependent work orders are linked by an arrow from the blocking operation to the one it blocks, and the blocked order is shown starting after the one before it.

Frequently asked questions

Is work order dependencies enabled by default?
