Introduction

In Odoo, both goods and services are treated as products. Choosing the right product type when setting up a product is essential, as it influences how the item is invoiced, purchased, sold, and tracked in inventory. This guide will help you understand each product type and how it impacts operations in Odoo’s ecosystem.

Accessing Product Configuration

 

To create or edit a product:

  • Navigate to Inventory App → Products → Products
  • Click on an existing product or click New to create one.

 

For Sale vs. Purchase

 

Products can be marked as purchasable, sellable, or both:

  • Sales: Tick if the product is sold to customers (e.g., finished goods).
  • Purchase: Tick if the product is bought from suppliers (e.g., raw materials).

 

Types of Products in Odoo

 

When creating a product, you must select its Product Type from the General Information tab.

 

  1. Goods
  • Definition: Tangible items (e.g., machines, food, clothing).
  • Features:
    • Triggers extra tabs (like Inventory).
    • Allows inventory tracking.
    • Enables smart buttons like On Hand, Forecasted, Replenish.
  1. Services
  • Definition: Intangible offerings (e.g., maintenance, consulting).
  • Note: Not trackable in Inventory.

 

  1. Combo
  • Definition: A mix of goods and services (e.g., product with included setup or maintenance).

 

Invoicing Policy for Goods

 

This setting appears only if the Sales checkbox is enabled and the Sales app is installed.

  • Ordered Quantities: Customer is invoiced when the sales order is confirmed.
  • Delivered Quantities: Customer is invoiced only after delivery.

 

Tracked vs. Untracked Goods

 

Tracked Goods

 

  • Odoo maintains inventory records.
  • You can track:
    • By Unique Serial Number
    • By Lots
    • By Quantity
  • Used for products that require stock control, valuation, or traceability.

 

Untracked Goods

  • Also called non-inventory products.
  • Used when inventory is not maintained, like office supplies or packaging.
  • Always considered available, but not reflected in inventory reports.

 

Inventory Features

 

On-hand and Forecasted Quantities

  • On Hand: Current available stock.
  • Forecasted: Stock expected after pending receipts and deliveries.
  • Available only for tracked goods.

 

Putaway Rules and Storage

  • Helps organize incoming goods to optimal storage locations.
  • Applies to both tracked and untracked goods.
  • Can set storage capacity limits (e.g., max 10 sofas per zone).

 

Replenishment and Reordering

 

Reordering Rules

  • Only work with tracked products.
  • Located via the Replenish smart button.
  • If already set, shows as Min/Max for minimum and maximum stock limits.

 

Purchase Orders

  • Both tracked and untracked products can appear in RFQs.
  • For untracked products, stock level does not update after receipt.

 

Manufacturing and BOM

  • Both types can be:
    • Manufactured
    • Subcontracted
    • Added to a Bill of Materials (BoM)
  • Smart buttons:
    • Bill of Materials – View components needed to manufacture.
    • Used In – See where this product is used.

Transfers (Internal Moves, Receipts, Deliveries)

  • Tracked goods: Inventory levels are adjusted during transfers.
  • Untracked goods: Transfers are possible, but no quantity tracking.

 

Packages

  • Both types can be packaged.
  • However, untracked products:
    • Don’t appear in package contents.
    • Are not affected when moving packages with the Move Entire Packages option.

To enable this:

  • Go to Inventory → Configuration → Operation Types
  • Open any operation and tick Move Entire Packages.

 

Inventory Reports

 

Available only for tracked products and users with admin access.

 

Reports Include:

  1. Stock Report
    • On-hand, incoming, and outgoing quantities.
    • Access: Inventory → Reporting → Stock
  2. Location Report
    • Stock levels by location (requires “Storage Location” enabled).
    • Access: Inventory → Reporting → Locations
  3. Moves History
    • View all inventory moves for a product.
    • Access: Inventory → Reporting → Moves History or use In/Out smart button.
  4. Moves Analysis
    • Pivot table of all stock movements.
  5. Stock Valuation Report
    • Shows the monetary value of tracked inventory.
