Configure reordering rules

Odoo Purchase reordering rules keep frequently used products in stock automatically. Once stock on hand falls below a set minimum, Odoo raises a request for quotation (RFQ) or purchase order to replenish it, which helps avoid both stockouts and excess stock.

Before you start

The Inventory app must be installed, since it tracks the stock quantities that reordering rules depend on.

How to configure a reordering rule

  1. On the product form, tick the Purchase checkbox, set the Product Type to Goods under General Information, and tick Track Inventory.
  1. Click the Reordering Rules smart button on the product form (or go to Inventory > Operations > Replenishment), then click Create.
  1. Set the Min Quantity (the level that triggers replenishment) and Max Quantity (the level stock is topped up to). A Multiple Quantity can also be set so orders are always placed in fixed batch sizes, and a Unit for how the product is measured.
  1. Choose a Location for where the replenished stock should be received.
  2. Click Save to apply the rule.

Running reordering rules

Reordering rules are triggered automatically once a day by the scheduler. To trigger them manually, turn on developer mode and go to Inventory > Operations > Run Scheduler, then confirm.

Managing reordering rules

To manage every reordering rule at once, go to Inventory > Operations > Replenishment, where rules can be exported, archived or filtered.

Tips

  • Review sales and stock history to set realistic minimum and maximum quantities.
  • Adjust quantities for seasonal products to avoid stockouts during busy periods.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the Inventory app for reordering rules?

Yes, Inventory must be installed alongside Purchase, since reordering rules rely on it to track stock on hand.

What happens if Min Quantity is 5 and Max Quantity is 25?

If stock falls to 4, Odoo creates a purchase order for 21 units to bring stock back up to the maximum.

Do reordering rules run automatically?

Yes, a scheduler runs once a day by default. Reordering rules can also be triggered manually from Inventory > Operations > Run Scheduler.
