Odoo Sales milestone invoicing lets you bill a large or long project in stages as each phase is completed, improving cash flow and giving customers visibility into progress.

What milestones are

A milestone represents a key deliverable in a project. Instead of invoicing the whole project at once, each milestone is invoiced once it is reached.

How to set up milestone invoicing

  1. Go to Sales > Products > Products and create a product for each milestone.
  2. Under General Information, set the Product Type to Service, Event Ticket, Event Booth, or Course.
  3. Set the Invoicing Policy to Based on Milestones, and choose an option in Create on Order so a project is created automatically from the sales order.
  1. On the sales order, click the Tasks smart button, open each task and link it to the appropriate milestone.

How to invoice a completed milestone

  1. On the sales order, click the Milestones smart button and tick the Reached box for the completed milestone.
  1. The Delivered column on the sales order updates. Click Create Invoice, leave it as Regular Invoice, and click Create Draft Invoice. This creates an invoice for the completed milestone only.
  2. Click Confirm on the draft invoice, and once payment is received, click Register Payment to record it.

Repeat the process for each remaining milestone until the project is fully delivered and invoiced.

Frequently asked questions

What product types support milestone invoicing?

Service, Event Ticket, Event Booth and Course product types can use the Based on Milestones invoicing policy.

Does marking a milestone as reached invoice it automatically?

No. Marking it Reached updates the Delivered column, but you still click Create Invoice to generate the bill for that milestone.

What happens once every milestone is invoiced?

The sales order’s Invoiced column reflects the full amount, and no further milestone invoices are needed.
