Introduction

Using a barcode scanner in Odoo Point of Sale (POS) helps streamline operations, speed up transactions, and improve customer service. With barcodes, you can quickly add products to the cart or log employees into a POS session, ensuring efficiency and accuracy.

Step-by-Step Instructions

 

1. Enable Barcode Scanners

  • Navigate to Inventory → Configuration → Settings.
  • In the Barcode section, tick Barcode Scanner.
  • Save your changes.

2. Assign Barcodes

To Products

  • Go to Point of Sale → Products → Products.
  • Open a product form.
  • Under the General Information tab, enter a barcode number in the Barcode

To Employees

  • Go to the Employees
  • Open an employee form.
  • In the HR Settings tab, assign an Identification Number or PIN Code.

 

3. Use Barcodes in POS

Scan Products

  • Use a barcode scanner to scan a product’s barcode.
  • The product is instantly added to the cart.
  • To increase the quantity, either:
    • Scan the product multiple times, or
    • Click Qty and manually enter the number using the keypad.

You can also manually type a barcode number in the search bar to find the product.

Log Employees

  • Restrict access to POS sessions.
  • Employees can log in by scanning their assigned barcode.

Tips

  • Pre-assign barcodes: Ensure all frequently sold products already have barcode numbers assigned.
  • Quick quantity updates: Train staff to scan multiple times for fast item counts.
  • Employee login: Barcodes reduce errors compared to manual PIN entry.
  • Back-up option: Keep manual entry enabled in case the scanner malfunctions.
