Work Ceners

Odoo Manufacturing work centres are where work orders are carried out. They are used to track costs, plan capacity, schedule production and measure efficiency, and must be specified whenever a work order is defined on a bill of materials (BoM).

Before you start

Work centres only appear once the Work Orders setting is enabled. Go to Manufacturing app > Configuration > Settings and tick Work Orders. Work orders are then managed from Manufacturing app > Operations > Work Orders.

How to create a work centre

  1. Go to Manufacturing app > Configuration > Work Centers and click New.
  1. Set the Work Center Name, an optional Tag for sorting, an Alternative Workcenter to use if this one is unavailable, a Code for the list view, and the Working Hours.

Working hours

Working hours define when a work centre operates and are used to calculate overall equipment effectiveness (OEE). Odoo defaults to Standard 40 hours/week (Monday to Friday, 8:00 to 17:00). To change this, hover over the Working Hours value and click the internal link icon to open and edit, or create, a schedule.

Productivity, cost and capacity settings

The General Information tab holds the goals used to calculate usage and running costs:

  • Time Efficiency: a multiplier for how this work centre’s speed compares to normal (for example, 50% if it takes twice as long as expected).
  • Capacity: how many units it can process at once.
  • OEE Target: the efficiency target, for example 87.5% if it is available 8 hours a day but expected to run for 7.
  • Setup Time and Cleanup Time: time needed before and after a work order.
  • Cost per Hour: the running cost of the work centre.
  • Allowed Employees: restricts who can work there; leave blank to allow everyone.

To set different capacities per product, use the Specific Capacities tab instead of the default Capacity value.

Work centre planning and performance

Scheduled work orders can be viewed as a Gantt chart at Manufacturing app > Planning > Planning by Workcenter, showing scheduled times and workload per hour.

Opening a work centre from Configuration > Work Centers shows performance smart buttons: OEE (productive time as a percentage of available hours), Lost (time lost to stoppages), Load (time to clear the current workload), and Performance (actual versus expected duration).

Comparing shifts

To measure performance by shift, create separate working hours for each shift, then duplicate each work centre once per shift and assign the matching working hours. Reports in Manufacturing app > Reporting > Work Orders can then be grouped by work centre to compare shifts, for example on Duration Deviation (%).

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to enable a setting to see work centers?

Yes, tick Work Orders under Manufacturing app > Configuration > Settings first.

What does Time Efficiency control on a work center?

It is a multiplier for how that work center’s speed compares to normal, for example 50% if older equipment takes twice as long.

Can I track separate day and night shift performance?

Yes, create working hours and duplicate work centers for each shift, then compare them in Manufacturing > Reporting > Work Orders.
