Manufacturing backorders

Odoo Manufacturing backorders let you complete part of a manufacturing order now and finish the rest later, when the full quantity cannot be produced immediately.

What a backorder does

Creating a backorder splits the original order into two, each keeping the original reference with -001 and -002 added. The -001 order holds the units already produced and closes immediately; the -002 order (the backorder) stays open for the remaining quantity, to be completed once more stock or capacity is available.

How to create a backorder in Manufacturing

  1. Go to Manufacturing app > Operations > Manufacturing Orders and open an order for a quantity of two or more (or create one and click Confirm).
  2. Once the units being produced now are ready, update the Quantity field at the top of the order to that number.
  1. Click Validate. On the You produced less than initial demand pop-up, click Create Backorder.

Once the remaining units can be produced, open the backorder order from the same list. If all remaining units are finished, click Validate to close it; if only some are, create another backorder the same way.

How to create a backorder from Shop Floor

The Work Orders setting must be enabled first, in Manufacturing app > Configuration > Settings. From the order’s Work Orders tab, open the relevant work order and click Open Shop Floor.

  1. Work through the card’s steps until Register Production, then open it (avoid the # Units button, which registers the full quantity).
  2. Enter a Quantity lower than the number shown, then click Validate.

Click Mark as Done. A new card appears for the -002 backorder, while the original becomes -001. If the original order has no work orders left, close it with Close Production; otherwise its remaining work orders continue on their own Shop Floor cards, and can also be split into further backorders the same way.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to a manufacturing order when a backorder is created?

It splits into two orders, using the original reference with -001 and -002 added: -001 is closed with the completed units, -002 stays open for the rest.

Can I create a second backorder from a backorder?

Yes, if only part of the remaining quantity is produced, another backorder can be created for what is left, following the same steps.
