subcontracting

Odoo Manufacturing subcontracting covers working with a third-party manufacturer that produces goods on a company’s behalf. It suits businesses that want to sell a wider range of products without investing in the equipment or labour to make them all in-house.

What subcontracting does

Odoo lets a bill of materials (BoM) be marked as a Subcontracting type, so the system knows a product is made by a subcontractor rather than internally. Two Inventory routes, Resupply Subcontractor on Order and Dropship Subcontractor on Order, control how components reach the subcontractor.

The three subcontracting workflows

  • Basic subcontracting: the subcontractor sources all the components themselves.
  • Resupply subcontractor: the contracting company ships components from its own warehouse to the subcontractor.
  • Dropship to subcontractor: components are purchased from a vendor and delivered straight to the subcontractor.

Each workflow can also be configured for whether the finished product returns to the contracting company or is dropshipped directly to the end customer.
