Odoo Manufacturing unbuild orders dismantle a finished product back into its components, useful when too many units were built or when components need to be reclaimed for another product.

What an unbuild order does

Unbuilding keeps inventory accurate: the finished product’s stock decreases by the quantity unbuilt, and its components increase by the quantities reclaimed, based on the bill of materials (BoM).

How to create an unbuild order

  1. Go to Manufacturing app > Operations > Unbuild Orders and click New.
  2. Select the Product to unbuild; its Bill of Material fills in automatically, or choose the BoM first and let the product fill in.
  3. Enter the Quantity being unbuilt, and select the original Manufacturing Order if known.
  4. Set the Source Location (where the product currently is) and Destination Location (where the reclaimed components go). If lots or serial numbers are tracked, set the Lot/Serial Number field too.
  5. Click Unbuild to confirm.

Creating an unbuild order for a product with zero or fewer units on hand is possible but not advised, since it can create inventory inconsistencies. Odoo shows an insufficient quantity warning; click Confirm to proceed anyway, or Discard to go back.

Scrapping unusable components

If any reclaimed component is no longer usable after unbuilding, remove it from inventory with a scrap order, so stock counts only reflect components that are actually usable.

What happens to inventory after an unbuild order?

The on-hand quantity of the finished product decreases and the quantities of its reclaimed components increase, based on the quantities entered.

Can I unbuild a product with none in stock?

Odoo warns that there is an insufficient quantity, but you can still confirm the order; this is not advised as it can create inventory inconsistencies.
