Units of measure

Odoo Inventory units of measure (UoM) let a product be tracked, bought and sold in different units, such as buying in bulk but selling individually, or converting between metric and imperial.

Before you start

  1. Go to Inventory app > Configuration > Settings, and under Products enable Units of Measure, then Save.

Units of measure categories

Review categories at Inventory app > Configuration > UoM Categories. Odoo can only convert between units in the same category, each of which has a reference unit. To add a unit, open its category, click Add a line, name the unit, choose whether it is bigger or smaller than the reference unit, and set the Ratio between them.

Setting a product’s units

  1. On the product form’s General Information tab, set Unit of Measure, the unit used for sales and inventory tracking.
  2. Set Purchase UoM for the unit used when buying the product.

How conversion works

  • A purchase order or request for quotation uses the purchase UoM, then converts automatically to the inventory UoM on the receipt.
  • Replenishment (including the Replenish button on a product) can generate a purchase order using the purchase UoM, provided the product has at least one vendor set on its Purchase tab.
  • A sales order can use a different UoM, which converts to the inventory UoM on the delivery order.

Frequently asked questions

Can Odoo convert between any two units of measure?

No, only between units in the same UoM category, since each category shares a common reference unit.

Where does the purchase unit of measure show up?

On the purchase order and request for quotation, while receipts and other internal documents show the product’s inventory unit of measure.
