Introduction

The Preparation Display feature helps businesses manage POS orders that require preparation before delivery.

  • Retail: Notifies the preparation team after payment so they can gather items for customer pickup.
  • Restaurants: Sends orders to the kitchen so meals can be prepared efficiently.

It ensures a smooth workflow between order-taking and order-fulfillment teams.

Step-by-Step Instructions

 

1. Enable the Preparation Display Feature

  1. Go to Point of Sale → Settings.
  2. Scroll to the Preparation section.
  3. Check the Preparation Display

2. Create and Configure a Preparation Display

  1. Navigate to Point of Sale → Orders → Preparation Display.
  2. Click New.
  3. Fill in the details:
    1. Name: e.g., Main Kitchen, Bar.
    2. Point of Sale: Select the POS sending orders here.
    3. Product Categories: Choose which categories are routed to this display.
    4. Stages: Define workflow steps (e.g., To Prepare → Ready → Completed).
    5. Colors: Assign stage colors (optional).
    6. Alert Timer (min): Set expected processing times for each stage.
  4. Save the configuration.

To edit an existing display, click the ⋮ (vertical ellipsis) on its card → Configure.

 

3. Practical Application

  • Go to Point of Sale → Orders → Preparation Display.
  • The Kanban view shows:
    • Configured stages.
    • Orders currently in progress.
    • Average completion time.

Quick access: Use the Kitchen Display app on the Odoo Dashboard.

4. Using the Preparation Display

From the POS interface: click Preparation Screen.

  • Stages and Order Count: View progress across stages (To prepare, Ready, Completed).
  • Ordered Products by Category: Grouped by POS categories (Drinks, Food, etc.).
  • Order Cards: Show:
    • Table & order number.
    • Status (color-coded).
    • Waiting time with alerts (turns red if overdue).

Update Order Progress

  • Click items on the order card → cross off individually.
  • Click the whole order card → mark all items as done.
  • Orders move automatically to the next stage.
  • Use Recall → send an order back to the previous stage if needed.

5. Customer Display

In parallel, open the Order Status Screen:

  • Shows customers which orders are:
    • Ready for pickup.
    • Almost there (in progress).

Tips

  • Use different colors per stage for faster recognition.
  • Set realistic alert timers to track bottlenecks.
  • Separate displays by category (e.g., Bar, Kitchen) to avoid confusion.
  • Use Recall sparingly to maintain accurate preparation tracking.
