Manufacture with lots and serial numbers

Odoo Manufacturing can require a lot or serial number to be assigned to every tracked product before a manufacturing order is completed, giving full traceability from the moment stock is produced. A lot number covers a batch of units, while a serial number uniquely identifies a single unit.

Before you start

  1. Go to Inventory app > Configuration > Settings, and under Traceability tick Lots & Serial Numbers, then Save.
  2. On the product’s form, in Inventory app > Products > Products, tick Track Inventory and choose By Lots or By Unique Serial Number from the drop-down.

Manufacturing with lot numbers

  1. Create a manufacturing order for the product in Manufacturing app > Operations > Manufacturing Orders, enter the Quantity, and click Confirm.
  2. In the Lot/Serial Number field, click the plus icon to auto-generate the next lot number, or select or type one and click Create.

If no lot number is set before clicking Produce All, Odoo generates and assigns the next available one automatically.

Manufacturing with serial numbers

Create and confirm the order the same way. For a single unit, clicking Produce All assigns the next serial number automatically, or one can be entered manually beforehand in the same Lot/Serial Number field.

Manufacturing multiple serial-tracked units

An order for several units of a serial-tracked product is split into one order per unit once serial numbers are assigned, each keeping the original reference with a suffix such as -001, -002.

  1. Click Produce All to open the Batch Production pop-up.
  1. Check the First Lot/SN and Number of SN fields, then click Generate to create the serial numbers, editing them if needed.
  2. Click Prepare MO to split the order and assign numbers without finishing production, or Produce to split it and close every resulting order at once.

The first split order opens automatically; use the Backorders smart button to view the rest.
