Master production schedule

Estimated reading: 3 minutes 262 views

The Odoo Manufacturing master production schedule (MPS) is a manual planning tool for forecasting demand and preparing replenishment ahead of time. It suits products with long lead times or seasonal demand, where waiting for confirmed sales orders or reordering rules would be too late.

What the MPS does

The MPS lets a procurement manager forecast demand for a product across future time periods, then generate the manufacturing orders (MOs) or purchase orders (POs) needed to meet it, based on a safety stock target and replenishment minimums and maximums. Adding a product to the MPS does not create any order automatically. It only suggests a quantity, and a user still triggers the actual order. Because of this, MPS should not be combined with reordering rules on the same product, as the two replenishment methods can conflict.

How to enable the MPS

  1. Go to Manufacturing app > Configuration > Settings and tick Master Production Schedule in the Planning section.
  2. Set Default Time Range (yearly, monthly, weekly or daily) and Number of Periods to display, then click Save.

How to use the MPS

  1. Go to Manufacturing app > Planning > Master Production Schedule. Each product added appears as a group of rows across the time period columns.
  1. Click Add a Product, choose the product, and set its Bill of Materials or Vendor, and Route (Manufacture or Buy). The product must already use the matching route, and a purchased product needs a vendor pricelist.
  2. Set the Safety Stock Target (minimum stock to keep available), and the Minimum and Maximum to Replenish quantities.
  1. Enter the Forecasted Demand for each period manually.
  2. Odoo suggests a Replenishment quantity based on the stock settings; adjust it if needed, then click Order to create the MO or PO.

The resulting Forecasted Stock for each period equals the starting stock, minus forecasted demand, plus replenishment, and carries forward to the next period.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use MPS and reordering rules on the same product?

No, MPS is a manual planning tool and combining it with automated reordering rules for the same product can create conflicting, inaccurate replenishment suggestions.

Does adding a product to the MPS create orders automatically?

No, the MPS only suggests replenishment quantities. A user still needs to click Order to generate the manufacturing or purchase order.

What routes does a product need to appear correctly in the MPS?

A manufactured product needs the Manufacture route on its Inventory tab, and a purchased product needs the Buy route plus a vendor pricelist.
