Sub-tasks

Odoo Project sub-tasks let you split a large task into smaller, more manageable pieces of work. They suit tasks that are too big for one record, follow a clear sequence of steps, or need to be shared across different assignees or projects.

How to create a sub-task

  1. Open the Project app and select your project.
  2. Open the task you want to split, then click the Sub-tasks tab.
  3. Click Add a line and fill in the Title.
  4. Click the save icon to save the task.

Editing sub-tasks

You can edit a sub-task’s Title, Priority, Status and Assignees directly from the parent task’s Sub-tasks tab, without opening it. Use the sliders icon to add or remove which fields appear there.

What changes on the parent task

  • A smart button shows the total number of sub-tasks, including how many are closed (done or cancelled).
  • Allocated Time shows the time allocated to the parent task and its sub-tasks together, so you can check sub-tasks are not over-allocated.
  • The Timesheets tab breaks down time spent on the parent task and its sub-tasks.

Click View on a sub-task line to open it. The sub-task form works the same way as a regular task form, and includes a smart button to navigate back to the Parent task.

What is the difference between a parent task and a sub-task?

The parent task is the original task; its sub-tasks (or child tasks) are smaller pieces of work linked to it, useful when work is too large for one task or spans different assignees or projects.

Can a sub-task belong to a different project than its parent?

Yes. Setting a Project on a sub-task makes it appear in that project’s own Kanban view, separate from the parent task’s project.
