Odoo Manufacturing by-products are the residual materials left over from making a finished product, such as scrap wood from cutting timber for furniture. Recording them on a bill of materials (BoM) lets Odoo track their on-hand quantity alongside the main product.

Before you start

  1. Go to Manufacturing app > Configuration > Settings, tick By-Products under the Operations heading, and click Save.

This adds a By-products tab to every BoM.

How to add a by-product to a BoM

  1. Go to Manufacturing app > Products > Bills of Materials and open the BoM.
  2. On the By-products tab, click Add a line, select the By-product and enter the Quantity produced.
  3. If it comes from a specific step, select it in Produced in Operation.

How by-products are recorded

Create a manufacturing order using a BoM with by-products set up (the product fills in automatically once the BoM is chosen), and click Confirm. When production is finished, click Produce All: stock updates for both the finished product and its by-products.

The Product Moves smart button shows each by-product’s movement from the virtual production location to where it is stored.

Can a by-product be linked to a specific operation?

Yes, if a BoM has several operations, the Produced in Operation field records which operation creates each by-product.
