Manage unsubscriptions (blacklist)

Introduction

Giving recipients an easy way to unsubscribe is more than good etiquette—it’s often required by law. It builds trust, keeps your brand genuine, and prevents your emails from feeling like spam. Odoo Email Marketing makes it simple for contacts to unsubscribe or even blacklist themselves so they never receive marketing emails again.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Enable the Blacklist Option

Let subscribers permanently opt out of all marketing emails.

  • Go to Email Marketing → Configuration → Settings.
  • Tick Blacklist Option when Unsubscribing.
  • Click Save.

This adds a “Blacklist” choice to the unsubscribe page.

  1. Add an Unsubscribe Link to Emails

Odoo automatically includes an Unsubscribe link at the bottom of every email template.

  • Important: If you use the Start From Scratch template, add the link manually: /unsubscribe_from_list or use a footer block that already contains it.
  1. How Recipients Unsubscribe
  • When a recipient clicks Unsubscribe, they’re instantly removed from that mailing list.
  • They land on a Mailing Subscriptions page to review or update other subscriptions.
  • Odoo asks for an opt-out reason, which you can customise at
Email Marketing → Configuration → Optout Reasons.
  1. Blacklist (Global Unsubscribe)
  • On the Mailing Subscriptions page, recipients can click Exclude Me to stop all future marketing emails.
  • A confirmation message appears: “✔️ Email added to our blocklist.”
  • Odoo records their reason for blacklisting for your analysis.
  1. View and Manage Blacklisted Emails
  • Go to Email Marketing → Configuration → Blacklisted Email Addresses to see all blacklisted contacts.
  • Click a record to view contact details and the reason for blacklisting.
  • In the chatter, you’ll find a time-stamped log note showing when the email was blacklisted.
  1. Unblacklist a Contact

Need to restore a contact?

  • Open their blacklisted record.
  • Click Unblacklist.
  • Enter a reason in the pop-up and click Confirm.

The contact will now receive marketing emails again. Transactional emails (like order confirmations) are never blocked.

Tips

  • Stay compliant: Always provide a visible unsubscribe link.
  • Segment smartly: Remove inactive or blacklisted contacts to improve deliverability.
  • Analyse opt-out reasons: Learn why people unsubscribe to improve content.
  • Respect privacy: Never attempt to re-add blacklisted emails without consent.
