Introduction

In Odoo, a package refers to a physical container that holds one or more products. Packages simplify logistics by enabling the movement, storage, and shipping of goods in bulk. Whether shipping products to customers or managing items within a warehouse, package management is essential for streamlined inventory operations.

What Is a Package in Odoo?

A package can represent anything from a cardboard box to a reusable container. It may contain a single product or multiple units of different products. Packages can be particularly useful for:

  • Grouping products for bulk movement
  • Shipping items while complying with carrier-specific requirements
  • Storing large quantities of goods efficiently

Enabling Package Features

To begin using packages in Odoo:

  1. Go to the Inventory app.
  2. Navigate to Configuration > Settings.
  3. Under the Operations section, activate the Packages feature.
  4. Click Save.

To work with cluster pickings and reusable packaging, also enable the Batch Transfers feature. Once enabled, you’ll see the Package Use field on package forms.

Package Use and Types

By default, the Package Use field is set to Disposable Box. This should be changed to Reusable Box when the package is intended for internal transfers (such as cluster pickings).

Package Types are optional but helpful when calculating shipping costs. They account for the weight and size of the container itself (like boxes, pallets, or shipping crates). Defining package types also helps align with carrier-specific shipping rules.

Creating Package Types

To define new package types:

  1. Go to Inventory > Configuration > Package Types.
  2. Click New and fill out the form:
  • Package Type: Name of the package (e.g., FedEx 25kg Box).
  • Size: Dimensions in millimeters (Length × Width × Height).
  • Weight: Weight of the empty package.
  • Max Weight: Maximum allowable shipping weight.
  • Barcode: Optional barcode for scanning.
  • Company: Limit visibility to a specific company (optional).
  • Carrier / Carrier Code: Link to a specific shipping carrier and carrier code.

Odoo uses these values to calculate total shipping weight by adding the package’s weight to the weight of the contained products.

Packing Items into Packages

Products can be packed in two ways:

  1. Detailed Operations
  • On any warehouse transfer (receipt, delivery, etc.), click the Detailed Operations (⦙≣) icon next to the product line.
  • In the popup window, click Add a line under the Destination Package section.
  • Assign the product to an existing package or create a new one.
  • Specify the quantity in the Done column and confirm.

  1. Put in Pack Button
  • On the transfer form, click Put in Pack to create a new package and assign all items in the transfer to it automatically.
  • This option is available on forms like receipts and delivery orders when the Packages feature is active.

Using and Managing Cluster Packages

To create cluster packages (used for internal movement and reusable containers):

  1. Enable Batch Transfers from Inventory > Configuration > Settings.
  2. Navigate to Inventory > Products > Packages and click New.
  3. Fill in the form fields:
  • Package Reference (required)
  • Package Type (optional for shipping)
  • Shipping Weight
  • Company
  • Location
  • Pack Date
  • Package Use: Choose Reusable for internal movements or Disposable for external shipping.

Cluster packages are ideal for internal logistics where items are grouped into reusable containers for picking and sorting.

Viewing and Managing Packages

To view all packages:

  • Go to Inventory > Products > Packages.

Packages are displayed in Kanban view, showing their current location and details. You can drag and drop packages between internal locations directly from the dashboard for easy management.
