Reassign lot/ serial numbers

Introduction

When switching a product’s tracking method in Odoo from No Tracking to By Lots or By Unique Serial Number, it’s important to properly reset and reassign inventory. Failing to do so can lead to inconsistent records, especially if products were already stored without tracking information. This guide outlines how to use inventory adjustments to correct these issues.

 

Step 1: Set On-Hand Quantity to Zero

  1. Navigate to Inventory app → Products → Products.
  2. Select the product that needs to be updated.
  3. Click the On Hand smart button to access the Update Quantity
  4. In the On Hand Quantity column, set the quantity to 0.
  5. If the product exists in multiple locations, ensure that the total quantity across all locations is set to zero.

 

Step 2: Change the Traceability Setting

  1. Go back to the product form (Inventory tab).
  2. In the Traceability section, change the Tracking setting from No Tracking to either:
    • By Lots, or
    • By Unique Serial Number

Step 3: Restore the On-Hand Quantity with Lot/Serial Numbers

  1. From the same product form, click the On Hand smart button again.
  2. On the Update Quantity page, a warning appears: No Stock On Hand.
  3. Click the New button at the top-left.
  4. Enter a new line with:
    • A Lot/Serial Number
    • The On Hand Quantity you previously had
  5. Save the adjustment.

 

Tip: Recover Original Quantity

  • To view previous quantities:
    1. Click the ✏️ (pencil) icon in the On Hand Quantity
    2. Click the History button on the far right.
    3. The inventory adjustment that changed the quantity to zero will show the original value.
