Introduction

Managing products using different units of measure (UoM) is essential for many businesses, especially those involved in international trade or dealing with products packaged in various formats. Odoo provides a flexible and comprehensive system to configure, convert, and manage multiple units of measure for products.

Why Use Different Units of Measure?

Businesses often need to use different units of measure due to various operational reasons:

  • International Trade: Products may be bought from suppliers using the metric system and sold in regions using the imperial system.
  • Bulk vs. Retail Sales: A product might be purchased in large packs (e.g., a box of 6 units) but sold individually.

Odoo enables seamless conversion between units, provided they belong to the same UoM category.

Configuration

To enable and use different units of measure:

  1. Go to Inventory app → Configuration → Settings.
  2. Under the Products section, enable Units of Measure.
  3. Click Save.

Once enabled, you can access and configure unit categories.

Units of Measure Categories

Navigate to Inventory app → Configuration → UoM Categories to view and manage UoM categories. These categories ensure compatibility between units. A product’s units can only be converted if they belong to the same category.

Each category has a reference unit, which acts as the base unit for conversions.

Creating a New Unit of Measure

To create a new UoM:

  1. Select a category (e.g., “Unit”).
  2. Click Add a line in the Units of Measure
  3. Enter details:
    • Unit of Measure: e.g., “Box of 6”.
    • Type: Indicate if it’s bigger or smaller than the reference.
    • Ratio: Set how many base units it contains (e.g., 6.00000).
    • Optionally, add a UNSPSC Category (international product classification code).

Setting UoMs on a Product

To assign UoMs:

  1. Go to Inventory app → Products → Products.
  2. Select a product.
  3. On the General Information tab:
    • Unit of Measure: Used for sales, inventory, and internal transfers.
    • Purchase UoM: Used for purchasing operations.

Automatic Unit Conversion

Odoo automatically converts between units in various scenarios:

  • Purchase Orders (POs): Purchase UoM is converted to inventory UoM.
  • Replenishment: Automatically creates POs using the purchase UoM when inventory dips.
  • Sales Orders (SOs): Sales UoM is converted to inventory UoM in deliveries.

Purchasing in a Different UoM

When creating an RFQ (Request for Quotation) in the Purchase app:

  • The purchase UoM is used by default.
  • After confirming the RFQ into a PO, click the Receipt
  • Odoo will convert the PO UoM to the internal UoM automatically.

Replenishment with UoMs

You can trigger replenishment directly from a product record:

  1. Click Replenish on the product page.
  2. In the pop-up:
    • Enter the quantity in the purchase UoM.
    • Click Confirm to create the RFQ.

Note: A vendor must be listed in the product’s Purchase tab for automatic PO generation.

Navigate to the RFQ via the Forecasted smart button on the product form.

Selling in a Different UoM

When creating a sales quotation in the Sales app:

  • The product’s defined UoM is used by default.
  • You can manually adjust the UoM in the quotation.

After confirmation:

  • Click Delivery to view the converted quantity in the product’s inventory UoM.
