Dropship subcontracting lead times

Estimated reading: 2 minutes 52 views

Introduction

Managing dropship subcontracting lead times in Odoo is key to meeting customer deadlines.
Lead times tell you how long it should take for suppliers and subcontractors to deliver.

For subcontracted products, you can set:

  • A delivery lead time for your subcontractor.
  • A manufacturing lead time to account for production.
  • An extra component delivery lead time if parts are dropshipped to the subcontractor.

Getting these right means your subcontractor gets components on time, can start production without delays, and you can confidently commit to customer delivery dates.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Go to Inventory → Products → Products.
  2. Open the subcontracted product.
  3. On the Purchase tab:
    1. Add your subcontractor as a Vendor (if not already).
    2. Enter the number of days they take to manufacture and deliver in the Delivery Lead Time

2. Set Manufacturing Lead Time in the BoM

  1. On the product page, click the Bill of Materials smart button.
  2. Open the relevant BoM.
  3. Go to the Miscellaneous
  4. In Lead Time, enter the same number of days as the delivery lead time.

This ensures Odoo knows when the subcontractor must have components to start production.

3. Set Component Delivery Lead Time

If components are dropshipped directly to the subcontractor:

  1. In the BoM, click each component.
  2. On the component product page, go to the Purchase
  3. Add the vendor supplying that component.
  4. Enter the Delivery Lead Time for shipping to the subcontractor.

4. Run the Dropship Subcontracting Process

  1. Create an RfQ (Request for Quotation) for the subcontracted product.
  2. Set the Expected Arrival date to allow:
    1. Vendor dropship time for components.
    2. Subcontractor manufacturing and delivery time.
  3. Confirm the Order → this triggers a second RfQ to purchase and dropship components to the subcontractor.
  4. Adjust the Expected Arrival date in the component RfQ if needed.
  5. Confirm the component order before the Order Deadline so the subcontractor receives everything on time.
  6. Once components arrive, the subcontractor manufactures and delivers the finished product.

Tips

  • Match manufacturing and delivery lead times for better scheduling.
  • Remember: lead times are estimates, not guarantees. Always allow for delays.
  • Use the Dropship Subcontractor on Order route for automated workflows.
  • Check Order Deadline dates in Odoo — missing them can cause late deliveries.
